Tsunami: Helping Each Other by Ann Morris
Publisher: Lerner Publications
Copyright:2005
Number of Pages: 32
Age: 4+
Genre: Nonfictional
Summary:
In this book it talks about a Tsunami that hit Thailand and a family that has to go through the after math. Through this book it talks about the before and after the tsunami hit. It talks about the families experiences during the storm and the chaos after. The main focus however was after the story when the family had to deal with the loss of loved ones, the availability of food, shelter, clothing, disease control, and the children's retry to start a school again. This book portrays what so many people underestimate what people have to go through.
My reaction
I enjoyed this book because I have never been through a tsunami and I have no idea what the after effects are and how hard it is to cope with the after math. I think that this book did a great job in showing how hard it is and was for that family.
Who would benefit from this book?
I think that everyone would. Children need to learn about the natural disasters that happen in this world and I think that through pictures and a story about a specific family would be a great way to open the door to natural disasters.

Age: 7+
Genre: Nonfictional/Picture
Summary:
This is a story about a little girl named Ruby Bridges. Ruby was an African American who was sent to an all white school. On Ruby's first day in school there was an angry mob outside of the school saying that the little girl didn't deserve to come to an all white school. However, even though all the white people were protesting Ruby continued to go to school. When she went to school she had to have guards walk her to school in case the mob tried to hurt Ruby. One day when Ruby went to school no one was in the classroom but the teacher. All the white folks pulled their children out of the school because they didn't want their children going to school with an African American. The teacher continued to teach Ruby. One day the mob was more angry than ever. Ruby stopped in the crowd and started to say a prayer. She said a prayer so soft and sweet that asked God to forgive the people because they didn't know what they were doing and that He should forgive them like when they said bad things about Him a long time ago. After Ruby said her prayer she continued to go to school. Eventually more African Americans came to that school and the whites returned to school as well.
My reaction
I loved this book very much. I loved that Ruby was so brave. I loved the prayer that she said. That prayer touched me because it was said in a way that I hadn't thought of before. I loved that she related herself to Jesus Christ when people said bad things about Him, she felt the same way. It was very moving and an important part of our history.

Voice of an Angel
Voice of an Angel by Charlotte Church
Publisher: Warner Books
Copyright: 2001
Number of Pages: 232
Age: 12+
Genre: Nonfiction
Summary:
In this book it talks about Charlotte Church and how she has become the person she is today. Charlotte Church has this book because she wants her fans to know who she really is and to know about her as a normal person. This book allows her fans to get to know her on a deeper level not as a celebrity but just as Charlotte Church. An example of something that she talks about is when she talks about Caroline Cooper, her aunt. She talks about how wonderful her aunt is and that her aunt was her biggest influence in her music. Another example would be when she talks about how she thrills to her grandfathers stories about the rock band he had when the Beatles first hit the charts. This is a down to earth book that allows you to know about one of the many celebrities in this world.
My reaction
I liked this book because it allowed me to get to know about a singer that I didn't know much about. It was fun to read because even though we think that some celebrities have totally different lives, we forget that they are just humans. They have little things that they love and hate just as everyone else.
Who would benefit from this book?
I think that anyone who has listened to her music and who loves the music industry. It would be a fun read for those people because it gets them exposed to see how celebrities become who they are.

The Great Little Madison
The Great Little Madison by Jean Fritz
Publisher: Puffin Books
Copyright: 1989
Number of Pages: 151
Age: 13+
Genre: Nonfiction
Summary:
In this book it talks about how James Madison was able to be a huge part in forming our constitution that we live by today. He was able to help steer America through turmoil of two wars and ensure that our government and nation came out of that war still intact and able to continue on as a strong nation. It talks about how James Madison was a small person, with a small voice and he was able to rise to become a great president of the United States.
My reaction:
I didn't enjoy this book as much. I think that because I read the Lincoln Photobiography I had a hard time adjusting to this book that wasn't as easy of a read. This book was in the form of a normal chapter book which makes reading about history a lot harder. If the book had more pictures and broke up some of the reading more then I think that this book would have been more enjoyable.
Who might benefit from this book?
I think anyone who loves to learn about history would enjoy reading something like this. The reader would really have to enjoy learning about our past presidents and history because, as I have said, it is in form of a chapter book, which makes it harder to read.

The Great Good Thing
The Great Good Thing by Roderick Townley
Publisher: Scholastic
Copyright: 2001
Number of Pages: 216
Age: 12+
Genre: Fantasy
Summary:
In the story of The Great Good Thing, the main character Sylvie is a character in a book. During the story the reader goes to bed and as she fell asleep the book's story started to burn. Once the books story started to burn the characters from the book had to go into the dream of the reader named Clair. Once they were in the head for a while Clair started to get old, so the characters needed to move to Clair's daughters dream, Lily. Through the book the story is being told through Clair's mind. When it comes time to move to anothers dream Sylvie is the only one that makes it through to Lily's mind. Once Sylvie is in Lily's mind she tells her the story and has her write it down. Once the story is written and published Sylvie was able to transfer down into her story. The characters in the newly written book are different from the original because every one imagines characters differently, but Sylvie was able to live on and continue her story.
My reaction
I enjoyed this book but it was definately more complicated of a story for a child to follow. I think that it was great because it was original and the characters were orginial as well. It was a refreshing story line.
Who might benefit from this book?
I think that it is meant for an older reader because it is layered with different ideas through the book. I think that if the reader is old enough and likes that fantasy type then they could enjoy it. However, some readers might lose interest quickly because of the complex story line.
What problems might this book cause?
The reader that reads this should be and would be old enough to know that characters from books can't literally jump into your head, so I don't think that there would be a problem.

Morning Girl
Morning Girl by Michael Dorris
Publisher: Scholastic
Copyright: 1992
Number of Pages: 74
Age: 11+
Genre: Contemporary
Summary:
In this story it is told in two narratives. Each chapter flips back and forth between Morning Girl and her brother Star Boy. Through this story they both tell their perspective on different things. They both live on a Carribbean Island where they both roam and make up their own adventures. They explore the different things around them while trying to grow up and understand life. The big tragedy in the book is when there is a hurricane and it comes to destroy everything. All the families lost everything, fortunately no one was killed. They all felt that it would be OK because everything that was destroyed could be built again. So through that plot, the story is about these two kids who learn how to grow up and how to make the best of things even when it seems really hard. In the end they were rebuilding and Morning Girl gets up and goes to the ocean; she sees visitors and welcomes them to their land. In the end, its the girl hoping for a new beginning and a new start to a better relationship with her family and brother.
My reaction
I enjoyed the book because of the detailed writing. It was an easy read but it was detailed so that a picture could be painted in your mind. It was a good read and it made you get a taste of a different culture.
Who might benefit from this book?
I think children who are able to understand detailed writing. When the reader can understand the details they are able to appreciate the portrait that is being painted in their heads.
What problems might this book cause?
When Star Boy runs away at different times, children might think its ok to disappear and not come back for a while, just because they think its funny. That could put the wrong ideas in children's heads.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne

Number of Pages: 216
Age: 14+
Genre: Contemporary
Summary:
A boy named Bruno who is 9 years old who lives with his mother and father during the time of the Nazi. Bruno's father was promoted to a commander and they were forced to move to a place called Out-With. Once they get there Bruno gets really homesick and so he starts to observe his home and the surroundings. He starts to observe that in the distance there are people in striped pajamas. Bruno asks his dad who those people are and his dad says that they are not people, they are jews. Then his dad says that Bruno isn't allowed to go around the house or around outside. However, Bruno got bored so he went outside and saw a little boy. Every day they started to meet and hang out. Soon Bruno snuck under the fence and put on striped pajamas to help the little boy find his father. But they werent able to find him. Bruno said that he wanted to go home but when he tried to go home the men in suits got all the people in stiped pajamas into a line. It started to rain and Bruno thought that the men were leading them into this chamber to protect them from the rain. However, Bruno was sitting in the dark chamber with the little boy holding hands. What they didn't know was they were in a gas chamber. Later on Bruno's family went looking for Bruno and found the gate bent. They ended up finding Bruno dead among the Jews. In the end the father said he didn't care what happened to him anymore because of the loss of his son.
My reaction:
I teared up. The book was so sad. It was well written and very touching. It made me very sad because it was unfortunate that a little boy had to die in order to help another and they didn't find the father and they all had to die anyway.
Who would benefit from this book?
I think that anyone who can handle learning about the Nazi's and what they did to people could handle it. It definately needs to be an older reader because what happened to the jews was real and it can be scary to about.
What problems might this book cause?
This could cause a hardship because it can cause an emotional stir in people about the Nazi time. The people who read it could get upset knowing that the Jews were torchured and killed because of their religion.

There are many misconceptions of how Lincoln acted and what he was like. This book goes through and was able to clarify how he really was. An example would be that Lincoln was a funny guy. He had a great sense of humor and he loved his family very much. He wasn't always a strict and uptight kind of person. He even was able to make a joke about his own looks. This book also has many pictures of Lincoln while he was in his term of office. The pictures are wonderful to look at because it gives a better idea of what he looked like and the things he did.
My reaction:
I enjoyed this book very much. I thought that it made reading about one of the presidents more interesting than others. This book I believe made it more interesting because there were pictures, it had bigger font, and the reading wasn't made out to be complicated at all.
Who might benefit from this book?
I think that any one would. Even adults would probably enjoy reading this book because you can learn so much about Lincoln rather than reading a huge book about his history. Children could easily read this book as well. I think that it should be 12+ because of some of the graphic pictures and some of the writings about the wars that Lincoln had to go through.
What problems might this book cause?
None, because this book is about things that actually happened.
